        AniMazSpot: The Time is Right

AniMazing Spotlight! was launched Oct. 1, 2008, out
of a concern that animated shorts weren’t getting
the respect and recognition they deserved, for
their own creative and technical innovations, and
for the impact they have on viewers concerning
important world-wide issues. Plus, animated shorts
are the first step for many as an entrée into the
animation community, so they need to be seen.

Our goal was to correct those inequities -- we’re on
our way -- the time is right. Animated shorts can be
powerful and to the point, and these animated shorts
filmmakers need recognition, respect, and reassurance
that they’re not heading down a dead-end. Our first
step was to put an international panel of animation
experts together to give written critiques to every
filmmaker's short. The panel was an instant success.

The next step was to create an annual festival to show
these filmmakers’ shorts to the large and important
Southern California animation community, so young film
makers can get the exposure they deserve. The first
year one individual, Dr. Robert Bunes, shouldered most
of the financial burden, while Tee Bosustow focussed
on organizational and production matters. Soon they
realized that Animazing Spotlight needed to become
a non-profit organization, and so began the long process
of research and applications. Shortly after the 2009
inaugural festival at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood,
AniMazSpot became a California State Non-Profit
Organization. (see official document below left)

But, that was just the beginning. In 2010, Bosustow
took over the bulk of the financial responsibilities,
and began preparing the complex application for
the IRS 501c3 federal non-profit tax exempt status.
The thick proposal was sent off to the IRS on February
    19th, 2010 and determination to grant AniMazSpot’s
federal tax exempt status came in June. But it went
to the old AniMazSpot address, so it wasn’t discovered
until November 3, 2010. (official document below right)

So, the IRS is sending us our determination papers,
showing we are a state AND federal non-profit,
    making all donations tax deductible.

    Donors, Sponsors, Funders, and Patrons
are generally thought of by AniMazSpot in
terms of the amount they donate.

You can choose any name you wish for your
    contribution, otherwise Donors will be
anything up to $1,000, Sponsors go up to
$5,000, and Patrons are anything over.

Advertisers are usually those who take out a specific ad in a souvenir program or on our website, such as banner ads.

    The terms are somewhat interchangeable,
so select what works best for you.

  Short History
     Our three interconnected projects
began in 2003 when we started work
on a feature length documentary on
UPA Pictures, which morphed into a
quest for lost UPA films and materials.
The interviews we did for the doc soon
expanded into a series of interviews

on animation people in general, which then became a podcast called

Toon in to the World of Animation.  Work continues to be done on the doc and interviews.  In summer of 2008 we developed the AniMazing Spotlight! project, launching it in the fall of 2008.  Investments, loans, and donations have been put toward all three projects, and in terms

of financial support, we consider the support of one, to be the support of all three.  Now that we are a non profit we no longer accept and investments, as that is not allowed under our new organization.
