UPA Gala at AniMazSpot 2012

Magoo at the Alex, on September 15th, will be the feature event at the AniMazSpot 2012 festival this year, from September 9th through the 16th. Actually, there are two events planned, so far, at the historic 1,400 seat theater in Glendale, California, in the center of the Los Angeles Animation community. The late afternoon event will be animation luminaries talking about UPA’s influence on their work, showing some of their own animation, as well as illustrious clips from UPA classics. The evening event will be the screening of all 15 Oscar nominated and winning shorts, plus five Magoo favorites. All prints will be recently restored 35mm prints from Sony Pictures, two in Cinemascope. Already “Magoo at the Alex” is being considered a one-time only must-see animation event. Magoo meets AniMazSpot 2011

The non profit organization Animazing Spotlight has two events happening this year with related VIP events and special collectable gifts, all four events are found at www.animazspo.com. AniMazSpot 2011 has a weekend full of fascinating animation programs and screenings and awards, in mid-September. From animation techniques for Avatar, to award winning shorts from India, to Magoo Makes News, and “OMG it’s Godfrey”, a tribute to the unorthodox British humor of the great Bob Godfrey (his short “Great” won the first British Oscar for animated shorts). Next up, Mr. Magoo headlines a gala event at the historic Alex theater in Glendale, which will screen all new 35mm prints of the complete 15 UPA shorts that won Oscar nominations, three of them won the gold guy, plus five additional Mr. Magoo favorites. Sign up early before tickets are sole out. And, finally, many of you have been asking when we’re going to add more of our 160+ interviews to the site, and all we can say is that it’s on our hot “to do” list, so soon, hopefully very soon, thanks for you patience.

Memorable Animation Festival

Apologies for neglecting our Toon in website, but help is on it’s way. We hope to be able to start adding more interviews before the end of the year. In the meantime, we had our first public presentation of a program created from 3 dozen of our Toon in interviews. It was called “I Did it My Way”, ran about an hour, and it was shown on Sunday, September 5th, at AniMazing Spotlight’s 2nd Annual Weekend of Animated Shorts Festival, at Woodbury University, in Burbank. Toon in event at Animated Shorts Festival

The AniMazing Spotlight website is full of information on this year’s festival, coming up in just 3 weeks, September 4 & 5, at Woodbury University, in Burbank. Visit their web site at www.animazspot.com, then click the big white panel at the top of the Home page, with Lou Romano’s Juggler, which he designed exclusively for the festival. Clicking this panel takes you to their Festival page. If you scroll down you see all the festival events, one of which we’ll talk about next, screenings of all the shorts nominated in various categoies, advertising opportunities, collectables to purchase, awards presentations, eateries near by, and more.

But, the highlight for us is the very first “Toon in to the World of Animation” event, outside of this podcast. We are hosting an event on Sunday, from 12:30 to 1:30, in Section 3, called “I Did it My Way“, which features about two dozen of our Toon In interviews, talking about how they got interested in getting into animation. It’s quite fascinating to hear, and see, them talk about the same question, and it gives you a chance to see the people you could only listen to on this podcast. If you decide to attend please come up and say hello. I’ve enjoyed doing these interviews so much, I’d love to meet some of you listeners.

Also, before I sign off, we want to mention once again, that we will soon be getting back to putting up more interviews, after the AniMazing Spotlight Festival, of course. AniMazSpot Q2 Winners Announced

AniMazing Spotlight! has announced the two Second Quarter winners, the funny and inventive comment on ways to save the environment, “The Hybrid Union” by Serguei Kouchnerov from Kiev, Ukraine, and the remarkable experimental short, “The Bellows March” by Eric Dyer from Baltimore, Maryland. Both very different, both award-winning material. They join the first quarter winners, “The Lighthouse” by Velislava Gospodinova from Sofia, Bulgaria, and El Salón México by Paul Glickman and Tamarind King. All four become nominees for Best of Festival early in the fall. There are still two quarters to go, so if it’s like 2009, there will be eight shorts vying for the Best of Festival winner, and this year the winner will receive the new “bozu” bronze trophy being designed and cast by Larry Loc. Mike Kazaleh … 1st to enter $3,000 contest

AniMazSpot $1,000+ Contest, and more

First 2010 Quarter Winners: “The Lighthouse” by Velislava Gospodinova, from Sophia, Bulgaria, and “El Salón México” by Paul Glickman and Tamarind King are the two winners for the first quarter of 2010.

Second Quarter Shorts: Still time to submit independent animated shorts, for feedback from an international panel of animation experts, and to compete for a number of award possibilities. Deadline March 8.

Bronze Bozu Trophy: Larry Loc is designing a bronze trophy, the Bozu, for the 2010 Best of Festival winner, based on a caricature done at Walt Disney Studios back in the late 1930s.

$1,000 Funny Thing Contest: Bob Danziger has written a humorous book on energy independence, with a contest to find someone to design the cover. The winner will receive $1,000, and inside pages will receive $200 each. Deadline: March 8.

AniMazSpot Embraces 2010

Our umbrella group, AniMazing Spotlight, had a very successful animated shorts festival in November 2009, but we’re not resting on our laurels. The first Quarter for entering animated shorts is now closed, and the shorts are being reviewed by the international panel of animation experts, winners will be announced on the AniMazing Spotlight web site this week. One of the submitted shorts is “El Salon de México” by Paul Glickman and Tamarind King (pictured to the right) … hmmm, can’t seem to get a picture up there today, so you’ll just have to see it on the AniMazing Spotlight home page post for this month.

The second Quarter is now open for entries, deadline is March 8th, but we advise submitting early to avoid the usual late comers rush, and getting up on the web site longer. The site has been recently updated with the latest shorts, new international panel, and the festival page has a full review of the 2009 festival activities.
